September 11 is a day that, to Americans, will live in infamy. When we think of this date, we remember the horrors of the attack on the World Trade Center and the many lives that were lost. The world remembers as well, and many allies and adversaries have treated that date with solemn respect. However, it would seem that relations with certain countries have worsened to the point where the respect is lost now.
Russia, that old enemy, has begun preparations for the largest military exercise since the height of the Cold War. According to the New York Times, the event will host more than 300,000 troops, 1000 aircraft, and 900 tanks. A force not to be taken lightly. Whats more is that the event will have some never before seen talent added to the mix.
The People’s Republic of China has agreed to send a small parade of its own, and so has Mongolia. All this and more will begin on September 11. The significance of this particular date is not lost on anybody in the Kremlin or Beijing. This show of force is not meant to be a deterrent– it is meant to be a direct threat.
Russian state news has said that it is a response to American aggression to its ally Assad in Syria, and to Russia itself over false allegations of collusion with President Donald Trump during the 2016 Presidential Race. Whether any of this is true or not is inconsequential.
This event signals far more than a simple flexing of military muscle by an unofficial enemy. The event, with the addition of China, means that all suspicion of a Russia-China alliance against the United States are now confirmed. To make matters worse, our sitting President, Mr. Trump, has made a point of making all-out enemies of the second largest superpower on Earth, China. What exactly this spells out for the future few can say, however it is clear to see that no good can come of it. Without a serious miracle-style change in relations with both China and Russia, the fate of the nation may be far darker than any fears we may have of what Mr. Trump or the Republican Party will do directly.
